I don’t have an exact budget breakdown, but I would say be aware if you want to do any travel it will be expensive! I budgeted according to what the Global Experiences website suggested but as I have done a lot of travelling around Canada it was nowhere near enough. Even without a lot of this travel and just doing activities on weekends it can end up expensive, eg. To go skiing a day pass is CAD$100-150, ski rentals $40-80, plus food and transport, and accommodation (plus doubling the ski pass costs) if you stay the night nearby it ends up pretty pricy. Between inflation and the value of the NZ dollar at the moment it is definitely something to be aware of.
Here are the prices of a few things (some approximate) just when in Calgary:
- Flights – $3200
- Accommodation $4000
- Insurance – $700
- Phone $80 (phone plans here are super expensive)
- Food $75 (not including eating out)
- Fees (at Waikato) $4100
Excluding travelling and shopping, or any costs you still have back home (eg. Netflix)
