Kia ora koutou! Bonjour tout le monde!
My name is Madison, and it’s my final year studying Sociology and Criminology at Waikato. I’m about to embark on a year-long exchange to the University of Ottawa in Canada!
Is this your first time abroad?
I’m familiar with international travel as I grew up in Switzerland, but all my previous travel has been with my family. This exchange will be the first time I navigate a new country and new culture by myself.
Why do you want to have a global experience?
Having a global experience was something I was keen on before I enrolled at university. Now as I’m writing this post, and my exchange is fast approaching, I’m excited for this opportunity to change up my routine and surroundings, test my independence, and make international friends.
Why did you choose the University of Ottawa?
Canada, initially, was not on the cards for me because I was dead set on heading to Europe, but when I attended an information session for the University of Ottawa, I was introduced to the appeals of Canada as a destination.
I’m drawn to Ottawa, firstly, because it is on the fringe of French-speaking Canada, and while I have been learning French for a number of years, I’ve never been able to use it outside the classroom. I’m excited to finally put my language to the test!
Secondly, as criminology is still a small subject here at Waikato, I was drawn to Ottawa and its larger department in which I can dabble and see if a career appeals to me.
Lastly, I’m a big winter Christmas appreciator.. so when I was told that a white, snowy Christmas is pretty much guaranteed in Ottawa, I didn’t need much more convincing!
