An incredible time in South Korea

By Yeonsoo Kim

My exchange at Yonsei University in Seoul was an incredible experience, filled with moments that I’ll always remember. From exploring Korean society to making new friends, it was a chance to grow in ways I never expected.

One of my favourite experiences was visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, a huge historical palace in the heart of Seoul. Walking around the palace, I felt like I’d stepped back in time. The architecture was stunning, and the peaceful place itself was such a contrast to the Seoul city’s hustle and bustle. It gave me a real appreciation for Korea’s history and culture, and it was a great way to spend a day learning more about the country.

Busan was another highlight. The city had a completely different vibe from Seoul, and it was the perfect place to relax. I spent a lot of time at Gwangalli Beach, enjoying the view of the ocean and the Gwangan Bridge. I also got to attend ‘Gstar’, Korea’s biggest game exhibition. As someone who loves gaming, it was incredible to see the industry up close and check out some of the latest productions.

Global MT was another unforgettable experience. It was a chance to meet both local students and other international students, and the activities were a great way to bond. The weekend was full of team-building games and lots of socialising, which made it easy to make friends and feel part of the community. By the end of it, I felt like I had a whole new group of friends from different parts of the world, and I had a deeper understanding of Korean culture from a local perspective.

While my time abroad was full of exciting adventures, it wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was adjusting to life at Yonsei. The academic pressure was high, and the pace of university life was faster than I was used to. Still, I found the experience really rewarding, and it taught me to manage my time better and stay focused. I also had to get used to the fast pace of Seoul itself, where everything seems to move quickly.

This exchange has taught me a lot about flexibility and stepping out of my comfort zone. I learned how to balance study, travel, and social life while adapting to a new environment. I also realised how valuable it is to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds. By sharing experiences with other international students and locals, I gained new perspectives that have expanded my view of the world.

Looking back, I can see how much this exchange has shaped me. It’s sparked a curiosity about other cultures and countries, and it’s inspired me to seek out more opportunities to travel and learn. The experience has made me more confident, and I feel ready to take on new challenges in both my personal and professional life.
