By Kyle Barker
My name is Kyle Barker and I’m in my final year of studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of Waikato.
I chose to go on exchange because I’m excited about the opportunity to meet new people and experience how universities operate in different parts of the world. After speaking with other students who have been on exchange and hearing how worthwhile the experience was for them, I knew it was something I wanted to do.
I chose to go to the University of Alicante, Spain, because I was fortunate to be awarded the Erasmus Scholarship for Computer Science students. At the start of looking at exchange options I was particularly interested in going to Europe, and receiving the scholarship helped make the decision clear whereabouts in Europe I would go. Europe’s interconnectedness will offer amazing opportunities to travel and explore different countries and cultures while I study, making it an ideal destination for both academic and personal growth.
One thing I am a little nervous about is not knowing any Spanish. Moving to a country where I don’t speak the language is outside of my comfort zone. However, I’ve been reassured that the classes at the University of Alicante will be taught in English, which makes the academic side more manageable. I’m also hoping to pick up some Spanish along the way—it’ll be a great opportunity to learn through daily life.
Overall, I’m looking forward to the challenges and experiences ahead, and I’m excited to make the most of this opportunity to learn, grow, and experience a completely different culture.
