3rd year Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Sociology

The last time I spent a significant amount of time overseas was nearly 30 years ago, when I worked for the leader of a religious cult in the United States, which taught women their place was in the home, not in the world. Choosing to go on exchange to the UK is, for me, an act of reclaiming my independence—stepping beyond the safety of my home and country to fulfill a lifelong dream of exploring England. I’ve always been drawn to its historic places and the literary landscapes of the classic novels I love.
I chose Lancaster University because it’s the sister university to Waikato and is located in a region of England I’ve long wanted to explore. The campus is modern and vibrant, and the university offers an excellent programme in sociology and criminology—subjects I’m deeply passionate about.
This exchange represents more than just academic opportunity; it’s a chance for personal growth. I hope it will help me grow in confidence as I navigate life on the other side of the world, make new friendships, and experience a country I’ve always felt connected to from afar.
