The Journey, it’s what you’re going to make of it.

A few months ago, I imagined I would be soaking up on the beaches of Santa Barbara, overall just enjoying the classic American experience. But as life often goes, things didn’t go to plan and instead I find myself halfway through my exchange at Lancaster University, located in one of the wettest cities in the UK (I have probably seen blue skies four times since being here). But as the weeks fly by, it is becoming clearer that the journey isn’t about getting what I expected, but rather about what I can make out of it.

Five weeks in, and I feel like I’m still adjusting despite being someone who’s travelled before and is quite an independent person. There are still moments when the distance from home hits me harder than expected and I find myself missing the comfort of familiarity. And most of all, not being able to sleep in my own bed!

When I first arrived, I worried about whether I’d fit in. I knew I was going to be a few years older than many of the undergrad students and so I was apprehensive about attending social events, especially during Fresher’s week (and wow, what a lively whirlwind of a week that seemed to be, o-week is nothing compared!). But, hearing that age shouldn’t be of concern from a group of 18-year-old flatmates may have been exactly what I needed to hear from exactly the right people.

Since then, I have been pleasantly surprised by how friendly the students here really are. With over 160 societies and constant events, there is always an opportunity to meet and connect with people. Lancaster really does have such a passionate sense of community, there is something for everyone to be a part of!

This exchange has given me the chance to explore a couple of cities that I probably would never have thought of even visiting. Walking along Morecambe’s coastline with its stunning seaside views, or wandering through Lancaster’s cobbled streets, past the castle or along the canal with a coffee and pepperoni pizza slice from Greggs (ILY Greggs) has its own unique and charming allure.

At the end of this coming week, the annual Light up Lancaster festival will be transforming the city into a breathtaking display of light art and performances. With the celebration of the 5th of November originating in the UK, excitement to see this magical week is an understatement!

So, five weeks in and although I’m still adjusting to this new chapter, I’m realising that it’s okay to take things one step at a time. Not every day will be perfect, and the transition might not be as seamless as I imagined. But the excitement, the unpredictability and the challenge of putting yourself out there to make things happen, will make this exchange completely worth it.
