Things I wish I packed for exchange in Hawai’i

by Amy Walker

A backpack / duffel bag

As an exchange student, you will be exploring in some way shape or form almost every day. I have found that the best way to get around the island is on a bike. For this reason, having a backpack makes life so much easier! I bought one from target and use it almost every day whether that’s for day trips, hikes, bikes or even study purposes. A duffel bag would be a good option for weekend trips.

Tupperware & a big drink bottle

Having these items makes fueling your body while out and about that much easier. At the beginning of my study abroad experience, I was buying lots of individually wrapped, expensive snacks. Recently, I bought a compactable Tupperware container from target and it has been a game changer! You can grab large bags of trail mix, popcorn, oats, etc., take a handful and not have to worry about being hungry when on the go (especially when in nature and access to shops is not available). Sometimes I will sneakily take leftover food from the dining hall, pop it in the container and eat it the next day for lunch!

Similar colour clothes for washing

If you separate your darks and lights, I recommend packing clothing that is similar in colour. Doing your laundry can get expensive when you have to do multiple loads! I promise you do not need as many outfits as you think!

Travel-size toiletries for island hopping

If you choose to do some island hopping, you may wish to have carry-on luggage rather than checked-in luggage. For this reason, having some travel-sized essential toiletries is helpful!

Kindle

If you also love to read whether that is on the plane, during a beach day or in your downtime, I recommend investing in a kindle. I bought 3 books with me. While you can access books from the school library, having a kindle would give you an infinite amount of books to choose from and won’t take up as much space!!

In conclusion, if you are anything like me, your suitcase may be looking like an extension of your wardrobe. I promise, you do not need as many outfits as you think. Instead, consider taking up suitcase space with more practical things for all things adventure! Most of all, if you forget anything, don’t panic. (almost) Everything you could ever need can be found at target!!!
