Settled into Oahu

by Karl Sörstedt

Aloha all, I am now settled into my accommodation and the University life here on the island of Oahu. My classes are going well. The lecturers are all so welcoming and helpful with any questions I have. The classes are very much similar to the Tauranga campus with smaller rooms and less people, which I do like. However, the campus is very large. Every subject has a large building dedicated to each which is spread out over the 320-acre campus. The business school I attend is called Shidler College of Business. This is at the top of the campus and is set out in a 4 tower design which is quite cool.

During time out of university and the weekends, I have done some hikes that are near where I live. Koko Head and Diamond Head walks have been the best so far, the heat has been manageable however it is vital to bring a frozen water bottle and sunscreen. Some of the beaches and sites I have been at are Waimea Bay on the north shore, Hanauma Bay, and Waikiki.

One of my highlights is definitely watching American football on Saturdays. The atmosphere and scenes from the game are wicked. The school marching band attends and all the students get riled up. It’s such a cool event to witness. Overall, I’m having a great time, sometimes challenging to figure things out and how they work here. I miss home sometimes but that is all temporary.
