Earth Sciences in Hawaii

By Abi Evans

Kia Ora, I’m Abi and I am 23! I am currently finishing my second year of study towards a Bachelor of Earth Science with a minor in Māori and Indigenous studies. I will be heading to the University of Hawai’i, Hilo, on exchange as I enter into my third year of study.

I wanted to go on exchange from the moment I decided to go to uni as I knew I would need an adventure of some sort to keep me motivated throughout my degree. I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled quite a lot after high school, so settling back into study felt like a big commitment without some form of travel on the horizon. I decided on Hawai’i as it felt like the perfect destination that would incorporate all the elements of my degree. From the volcanoes, to the climate, to the ocean, as well as the beautiful culture, everything I could wish to study was offered in one place. Not only that, but the scenery, the hiking, and all the outdoor exploring, made it such an enticing destination for me.

From my trimester abroad I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the Hawaiian culture, study the incredible volcanoes that are unique to Hawai’i, go on many many adventures, meet new people, and build cool connections. I’m sure there are many amazing experiences waiting for me, and I can’t wait to see where this exchange leads!
