Kia ora,
My name is Maria, and I’m currently a first-year student at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato, pursuing a BA in Anthropology. As I wrap up my first year and head into my second, I’m excited to share that I’ve been given the incredible opportunity to spend a semester on exchange at UC Davis in California.
This opportunity came about through a scholarship that I was fortunate enough to receive. When I found out that I had been selected, I was both excited and grateful for the chance to participate in this exchange programme. The scholarship offers a fantastic opportunity to not only deepen my academic studies but also immerse myself in a new cultural and academic environment—an experience I might not have had the chance to pursue otherwise.
California was an obvious choice for me, as it’s part of the scholarship programme. As an Anthropology major, I’m particularly excited about the chance to study in a place with a rich blend of Indigenous history, migration, and modern-day cultural dynamics—areas I’m eager to explore further in my studies. California also boasts some of the top research institutions in my field, so I’m looking forward to learning from experts and expanding my knowledge of the subjects I’m most passionate about.
In terms of what I hope to gain from this experience, I’m looking forward to both academic and personal growth. Academically, I want to expand my understanding of Anthropology, while personally, I’m excited to experience life in a new place, meet new people, and gain a broader perspective on different cultures and ways of life. I believe this exchange will be a valuable opportunity to challenge myself, both intellectually and personally, and I’m eager to see how it will shape my future studies and career.
Karawhiua!
