How my exchange shaped me

By Caelyn Dillinger

Studying abroad is often painted as an adventure filled with excitement and discovery. While that’s true, my exchange experience was also a journey of growth shaped by challenges, valuable lessons, and an impact on my future.

The Challenges I Faced Abroad

Stepping into a foreign country was super exciting, but it came with its fair share of challenges. The first challenge was adjusting to a completely different cultural landscape. Navigating unfamiliar customs, language barriers while travelling around, and social norms tested my adaptability. Simple tasks, like grocery shopping or asking for directions, often felt overwhelming when I first arrived.

Homesickness was another significant challenge. Being away from family and friends during holidays and special occasions left a void that no video call could fill. Balancing academics with this emotional toll required resilience and mental strength.

Finally, academic differences posed their own challenge. The teaching style, evaluation methods, and even classroom dynamics differed from what I was used to. Adapting my learning style to fit a new system wasn’t easy, but it forced me to become more resourceful and independent.

What My Exchange Has Taught Me

These challenges were, in hindsight, some of the most powerful learning experiences. I developed a heightened sense of cultural awareness and empathy. Immersing myself in a new environment taught me the value of embracing diversity and understanding perspectives different from my own.

I also learned the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. Whether it was participating in a local festival, forming friendships with people from various backgrounds, or tackling language barriers head-on, every experience helped me build confidence and adaptability.

The Impact on My Future

Now that I’m back home, I’ve realized how much my exchange has shaped my outlook. I’ve become more open to change, more curious about different cultures, and more willing to embrace new opportunities. This experience has given me a global perspective that will undoubtedly influence both my personal and professional life.

On a personal level, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the little things I once took for granted. I’m more patient, more empathetic, and more willing to help others who may feel out of place in unfamiliar environments.

My exchange was more than just an academic journey; it was a transformative life experience. The challenges I faced shaped my character, the lessons I learned broadened my horizons, and the impact will resonate with me for years to come. If you’re considering an exchange, embrace the ups and downs—it’s a journey worth taking.
