2nd Year: Mechanical Engineering

By: James Walker

I have chosen to go on an exchange, as I feel like it is a great opportunity to explore another area of the world and experience another culture while pursuing my studies. I have chosen to go to the University of California, Los Angeles, as American college life has always excited me; especially through their sporting culture, which is something I’ve always admired. I wanted to go to California as it is warm and close to the beach, which is what I’m used to being from Mount Maunganui.

I hope to build international connections and create lifelong memories by embracing new experiences and fully immersing myself in a different culture. Studying at UCLA also gives me the chance to learn in a world-renowned academic environment and gain a fresh perspective within my studies. I’m looking forward to stepping outside of my comfort zone, meeting new people from around the world, and growing both personally and academically during this exchange.

Wishing you all the best in this next chapter — sounds like you’re going to make some lifelong memories (and connections too)!

  2. I really enjoyed your post — it strikes a nice balance between ambitious academic goals and the excitement of cultural exploration. Going on exchange to UCLA as a mechanical engineering student shows both drive and openness, and I appreciate how you want to stretch beyond comfort zones, build international connections, and grow personally as well as technically. Best of luck — I’m sure this experience will shape you in amazing ways!
