Exploring Education in Singapore

By Arama Lyall

Kia ora, I am Arama Lyall. I am a 21 year old from Kerikeri, and I am currently a second year student studying bachelor of teaching at the University of Waikato.

I knew immediately that I would apply for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m always going to take the jump towards adventure.

I decided to apply for this exchange because I am very curious about what a classroom looks like overseas. While I was in high school, I did a project about Singapore. I learned that the whole country was one city. I was fascinated by the history that led to Singapore’s success despite being separated from Malaysia. I also found the country’s long history of supporting diversity and different cultures both interesting and inspirational.

I was taught that one of the big factors that led to Singapore’s success was their education system. As someone who is currently navigating their teaching journey, I was highly motivated to apply for this exchange because I feel like it would be very beneficial for me to get some experience in a country where the people are known to have good education. I am also interested in seeing how their inclusive culture carries over into the education environment. I would love to have the chance to learn about the different teaching strategies that teachers use in Singapore.
