Iffah’s Seoul exchange diaries.

By: Iffah Ramlan

Studying abroad has been one of the most exciting and memorable experiences of my life. Coming to Seoul as an exchange student gave me the chance to not only continue my studies in a new environment, but also fully experience what student life and local culture in South Korea are really like.

One of the first things I’ve noticed about Yonsei was how lively and welcoming the campus feels. There is always something happening, whether it is student events, club activities, or just groups of friends gathering around campus. The atmosphere is energetic and inspiring, and being surrounded by both local and international students makes it even more interesting. It is a place where you constantly meet new people and hear different perspectives.

Student life here has been a huge part of my experience. Beyond attending classes, I have enjoyed exploring the area around campus, especially the cafés, restaurants, and shops that make neighbourhoods in Seoul so vibrant. There is a balance between studying hard and enjoying life outside the classroom, which has made my time here feel both productive and fun.

Living in Seoul itself has been an adventure. The city moves fast, but it also has so much character. One day I can be visiting a historic place like Bukchon Hanok Village, and the next I am exploring trendy areas filled with fashion, music, and street food. That mix of tradition and modern life is what makes South Korea so unique.

What I appreciate most is how everyday experiences here have taught me about Korean culture. From sharing meals like barbecue with friends, to learning small social customs and phrases in Korean, I have been able to connect with the culture in ways I never could from afar. Even simple things, like convenience store dinners or cherry blossom season, have become unforgettable memories.

I have met people from different countries, each bringing their own perspectives and stories. These friendships often begin with simple moments, like sitting next to someone in class and gradually grow into meaningful connections. Spending time together, whether it is exploring cafés, studying late on campus, or navigating the city has made those bonds stronger.

Studying abroad at Yonsei has been more than just an academic opportunity. It has been a chance to grow, adapt, and see the world from a new perspective. Looking back, it is the people, the culture, and the everyday moments that have made this journey so meaningful. South Korea has truly become a place I will always hold close to my heart.
